Frescos for the Masses
By Linda Wells of Welldesigned Art

One of the most exciting events in my life is painting in Italy. Standing on centuries-old marble floors, glimpsing an azure Italian sky peeking through arched windows, I smell fresh Focaccia bread wafting across the plaza. Ahhh - does it get any better than this?
I recall those days each time I paint a fresco using the techniques of masters like Michelangelo and Raphael. Once reserved for only the wealthiest of patrons, frescos are now both practical and affordable and can often be completed in a few days. First, I trowel plaster on canvas. Depending on the desired result, I will go with an uneven texture or one extremely smooth. Next, the cartoon, or pattern is transferred to the surface. In Renaissance times, this was done with a pierced pattern and ground chalk pounced through the holes. Now I use a type of carbon paper and stylus. It's a lot easier!

After under-painting the work with a monochromatic wash of umber or burnt sienna, I begin to fill in the details, typically working from the background to the foreground. For centuries, Frescos have survived because of the lime plasters used to encapsulate their pigments. Today, I create the same look using synthetic, eco-friendly water based paints and plasters. A French technique, marouflage, lets me paint the canvases in my studio and then apply them to the homeowners' walls. This allows me to work without disrupting the lives of my clients, and it gives my patrons the ability to remove the artwork and take it with them to their next home!

As founder of WellDesigned Art I have lived in Frisco for almost 20 years and am a member of both the Frisco Art Association and the Visual Art Guild of Frisco. Completing extensive research in recreating old world paint finishes and providing quality, authentic artwork is my passion. I continually update my skills, including those in cabinetry and furniture finishing, training both in Europe and domestically.
