Suppose you're an attractive high school girl and, you're not only a member of a large and unique family,
but your father is, in fact, one of the great pioneers of industrial efficiency. Then suppose he decides,
for no apparent reason, to apply his unorthodox methods to you and to the rest of your big family. The
results are terribly embarrassing, funny and, it must be admitted, extremely effective! To Anne, the eldest daughter,
however, the chief effect seems to be that of making them seem ridiculous to everyone else at school,
especially to the boys! So she, of course, rebels. Both Dad and Anne are miserable at the lack of
understanding between them. Then in a deft and moving scene, Dad becomes aware of how much Anne has grown up.
The play is based on the life of the Gilbreth family from the book by Frank Gilbreth and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey;
and dramatized by Christopher Sergel.
Parts available:
- Mr. Gilbreth - Mid - to late 40s - a successful business man, self-assured, proud of his wife and family and his accomplishments.
- Mrs. Gilbreth - Early - to mid 40s - neat, gracious and attractive. A psychologist.
- Mrs. Fitzgerald (the housekeeper) - early 50s - completely devoted to the family, although sometimes, her patience is sorely tried by the goings-on of such a large household.
- Dr. Burton - (family doctor) - late 40s to 50s - plain and outspoken, makes house calls.
- Joe Scales - Seventeen/Eighteen - a short, cocky chap, a popular cheerleader at school.
- Larry - Seventeen/Eighteen - clean-cut, nice-looking, another student from school.
- Mrs. Brill - late 40s - to mid 50s - very strict and stern, a teacher, has no love for the children and they have none for her.
