To Shake Hands or Not Shake Hands...
Are you changing your etiquette because of the Swine Flu?
With the recent outbreak of the Swine Flu, business people are hesitating when greeting others. When business people meet all over the world, the most common and recognized gesture is to shake hands. Historically the hand shake was used to show that both people were unarmed; the handshake today is a critical gauge of confidence, trust, and sophistication.
However, this greeting is currently under scrutiny as the virus H1N1, commonly known as the Swine Flu, spreads across the world. Could this change the way we greet others or how we do business in the future?
As a Career Coach and Etiquette Eexpert, I believe this will temporarily make everyone cautious, but in a month it will be business as usual. Therefore one should break out the hand sanitizer and brush up on your hand shaking etiquette because your future could depend on it!
Business Tips:
A two-handed handshake is not for first meetings. It is a sign of real affection, and you should reserve it for friends and intimates. Handshakes are not appropriate in all cultures. Investigate local customs if you will be visiting a foreign country.
